In the late 1960s, the demand for underwater watches increased in the fields of underwater research, offshore oil exploration and maintenance, as well as for applications such as diving, water sports and underwater special forces in the military and navy. The demand for a robust, waterproof, legible, reliable watch suitable for high diving depths led Omega to develop the distinctive Seamaster 600, which debuted at the 1969 Basel show and went on sale in April 1971. Although it was an excellent professional diver's watch, it also had a large retail following. Gianni Agnelli, the chairman of Ferrari and Fiat and one of Italy's most prominent personalities, had an allergy to the metals used in watch cases. This prompted him to wear his Seamaster 600 on the outside of his cuff, which increased the visibility of the watch and boosted demand enormously.
